read moreAn accessible paddle launch platform has officially opened at Riverside Gardens in the Mandurah eastern suburb of Greenfields, and is one of the first of its kind in Western Australia.
The new accessible platform features two custom slipways and special seating to facilitate safe river access for all-abilities paddlers and ensure a seamless transition from wheelchairs to canoes.
New upgrades have also been completed at key paddle launch sites at the Novara Foreshore in Dawesville including new sand, tables, seating, stairs, handrails, benches, shelters and beach matting.
This series of upgrades is part of the City of Mandurah's 'Peel-Harvey Estuary Trails' project and includes a $1.2 million investment from the State Government.
Of this, $400,000 is allocated to the paddle trail network, with the remaining $800,000 set to enhance the City's outdoor recreational infrastructure, including starting the development of a 30km Island shared-use trail, and enhancing the visitor experience at the Thrombolites, Lake Clifton.
The 'Peel Regional Trails' project focuses on creating dedicated trails around the Peel-Harvey Estuary, aiming to enhance recreation, tourism, and events, and guide local government areas in realising their potential as premier trail destinations.
City of Mandurah Mayor Rhys Williams shared "Mandurah is proud to be a State-wide leader in accessibility and inclusion, so we are delighted to welcome another facility where all members of our community and visitors can be included and have a go.
"Thanks to the State Government for its support with this great facility, and also the City's Access and Inclusion Advisory Group, as well as local paddle groups for their guidance and efforts in making this a reality.
"The Riverside Gardens 'All Abilities Paddle Launch' is one of the first of its kind in the State. It is part of great network of paddling facilities that allow people to enjoy the beauty of Mandurah's environment and waterways, as well as immerse themselves in Australia's Top Tourism Town."
