read moreA new $3 million lighting installation at Kayo Stadium has tonight illuminated the Dolphins’ historic first NRL home night game against the Dragons.
Four new 44-metre-high towers have been installed, with lights that can be switched between three different levels – 200 lux, 500 lux or 1800 lux, which is broadcast level, so they’re ideal for training, games and carnivals.
The lights will provide opportunities to play night games for the NRL and NRLW, Women’s State of Origin and Hostplus Cup, as well as QRL Under 19s and Open women’s games, community events and concerts.
The lights were installed by Queensland company Precision Sports Lighting and Electrical at Arana Hills and were funded by a $2 million Queensland Government Election Commitment and $1 million from Redcliffe District Rugby League.
Dolphins Group Chairman Bob Jones shared "these new lights will assist the Dolphins to continue to attract some of the most exciting events in the country to Kayo Stadium.
“The games we have already brought to the venue have injected millions of dollars into the Moreton Bay region and provided great benefit to local businesses.
“Now the broadcast quality lights will allow Kayo Stadium to host events we have previously been unable to cater for, such as women’s State of Origin matches.”
The Queensland Government approved more than $121 million to support rugby league in the state since 2015, including $3.1 million for projects associated with developing the Kayo Stadium field and amenities.
Queensland Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe noted “these lights are a game changer for the Dolphins and the fans because there is nothing like watching rugby league under lights.
“This will help flick the switch on what has already been an extraordinary debut season for the top-eight Dolphins, as they fight to secure a spot in the NRL finals series.
“The Dolphins decision to play their home games at Kayo Stadium, Suncorp Stadium and on the Sunshine Coast means they’re winning hearts and minds across the South-East. Growing a loyal supporter base that will hopefully become generations of rusted on fans.”
Local State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath added “Kayo Stadium is the heart and soul of the Dolphins so it’s fitting the ground has broadcast quality lighting.
“The lights are the missing link in a ground that has a 10,000-spectator capacity and a wider complex that includes a Leagues Club, gym, aquatic centre and shopping centre.
“The Dolphins are already fan favourites in the NRL and they have the facilities to match their growing popularity so they will continue to be a huge drawcard for fans from across the Moreton Bay region.”
