read moreA final day attendance of 24,798 to watch past champions Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal contest the men’s singles final saw the 2017 Australian Open reach a tournament total attendance of 728,763.
Following a fortnight of world class Grand Slam action backed by a range of off-court entertainment, the tournament has achieved a range of attendance and viewing milestones.
For the first time in history, attendance in the first week surpassed 500,000 fans with 503,382 - beating the previous record of 496,859 for Australian Open 2016.
Nine sessions drew a record crowd including the first Monday night, first Wednesday day and night, first Thursday day, first Saturday day, second Tuesday night, second Wednesday night and second Thursday day and night while ‘Coopers Saturday’ on the middle weekend of the tournament was the busiest of any day/night in tournament history, with 82,909 fans on site at Melbourne Park.
With its Host Broadcast team covering more than 840 matches, Tennis Australia and partner the Seven Network also claimed success in domestic TV ratings with the all-Swiss semi final between Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka on Friday 27th January seeing Seven beat the audience share of both Channel Nine and Network Ten combined.
Tennis Australia claimed that Nine’s traditionally highest-rating cricket match of the summer – the Australia Day One-Day-International held at the Adelaide Oval – drew 500,000 less viewers than Seven’s primetime tennis broadcast.
