Wollongong City Council develops new initiative to deliver Surf Education program

Wollongong City Council develops new initiative to deliver Surf Education program
November 5, 2020

The Recreation Services and Lifeguard Services teams at Wollongong City Council recently engaged Fluffy Cloud Media to help deliver their Surf Education program to local primary and high schools in the Wollongong area.

Wollongong Council’s Lifeguard Services traditionally deliver their Surf Education program to local Wollongong schools in the swimming off-season. However, with COVID-19 safety and health challenges, the Department of Education placed restrictions on school visits, forcing Council to reinvent the way their Surf Education program would be delivered.

As a result, Council’s Lifeguard Services chose to develop a short video animation, which would summarise the key surf safety messages covered in their face-to-face Surf Education program. The animation would form the basis of an online Surf Education lesson, facilitated remotely by Wollongong City Council lifeguards and to be delivered by school teachers. Due to the nature of visual imagery and inclusion of subtitles, this style of communication was considered most effective in portraying their surf safety messages to a broad audience.

In May this year, Wollongong Council engaged Fluffy Cloud Media to produce the two minute animation and an additional 30 second video for use on social media. Council worked closely with Lisa and Stig from Fluffy Cloud Media, who were able to produce a high quality animation, which succinctly summarised Council’s key surf safety messages, while accurately reflecting the coastal landscapes of Wollongong.

Wollongong Council commends Fluffy Cloud Media for their involvement in the project and excellent production of this animation.
