The 15,000 seat capacity Wyndham Stadium will also feature training pitches, sports medicine facilities, a gymnasium, recovery facilities, sporting spaces for the community to enjoy, with residential and commercial development also planned for the surrounding area.
One of 15 groups bidding to be part of the A-League expansion hopefuls, WMG would be gifted the land if their bid is approved, with the new stadium and precinct to become a bub for sport in Melbourne’s fast-growing Western Suburbs.
Announcing the plans, Wyndham City Mayor Peter Maynard stated “if successful, this project will mean great things for our local area. It will bring people from across Australia right here to Wyndham to watch on as the nation’s best football players battle it out on the field
“The value of this landmark deal for our community will be massive, positioning us as a destination of choice, and putting us on the national and international sporting stage.
“We’re also looking forward to the economic boost this project could bring to Wyndham. Hundreds of jobs will be created through the construction phase, and we’ll see more created once the stadium is up and running.
“There is also a plan to co-locate a university offering as part of the sports science precinct and sports centre of excellence, creating more educational opportunities for our residents.”
WMG is heaed by KPMG partner Maurice Bisetto with ex-Socceroo defender Steve Horvat and Lou Sticca from Tribal Sports Group part of the consortium.
Bisetto sees that the partnership with Wyndham City Council will deliver a “sustainable model for Australian football in one of the fastest growing regions in the country’’.
Bisetto advised “WMG is excited to be partnering with Wyndham City Council which will provide the impetus for our group to provide a privately funded and sustainable model for Australian Football in one of the fastest growing regions in the country.”
Melbourne has three other A-League bidders - Team 11 based in south east Melbourne, South Melbourne and a bid from the Belgravia Group, led by former Melbourne Victory Chairman Geoff Lord.
