read moreRenowned school holiday water safety and swimming program, VICSWIM, is to continue to receive a major funding contribution from the Victorian Government over the next three years.
Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren joined Aquatic and Recreation Victoria Chief Executive Grant Connors at the Moe Newborough Leisure Centre this morning to announce a $1.2million injection over three-years into the VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program.
Announcing the funding, Minister Eren stated “nothing is more important than keeping our kids safe ... too many lives are lost because people don’t have the right water skills (and)this program will help turn that tide.”
Connors said the Victorian Government’s support of the low-cost water safety and swimming program VICSWIM was further evidence of the importance of learning key aquatic skills for young Australians aged from from four to 12 years.
Connors added “we are proud of the strong history the Vicswim program has within the community, particularly in regional Victoria since its inception in 1976. With the State Government’s commitment to support the program for a further three years, it can continue to flourish and provide a fun and educational environment for young people to enjoy swimming and be safe while doing so in pools and open water venues around Victoria.”
“There are 138 participating locations around Victoria, including 108 regional venues that will embrace the VICSWIM program educating more than 11,000 kids over three weeks in January 2019.
“We acknowledge and thank the Victorian Government for their support of VICSWIM over several decades and look forward to utilising this commitment to grow the VICSWIM program in 2019 and beyond.”
On top of the VICSWIM funding, the Victorian Government has delivered $1.9 million to develop new safety standards and a code of practise for all Victorian public swimming pools.
Earlier this year, the Victorian Government also announced an additional $9.8 million to support swim lessons as part of the Swimming in Schools Program.
Registrations for the 2019 Vicswim program will open in October 2018 via the VICSWIM website www.vicswim.com.au
