read moreOne of the Sunshine Coast’s most hotly anticipated recreational infrastructure projects has been officially opened, with people of all ages descending on Alex Skate Park to see what the $1.2 million upgrade has to offer.
Today’s opening event was packed with skate demonstrations and workshops, appearances by pro skaters and action sports athletes and, of course, opportunities for locals to put the park to the test.
The new skate park design includes elements to suit skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders of all ability levels – with a split level advanced bowl, mini bowl and stair set among the key design features.
Sunshine Coast Councillor John Connolly said the design for the skate park was developed by Sunshine Coast Council and specialist skate park designers following two rounds of community consultation, advising “the design offers a modern and innovative skate park that includes many features the community asked for and allows the park to be used by more people at once.
“A stage area also provides opportunities for events such as competitions, demonstrations and learn-to-skate workshops.”
Former World Cup skateboard champion Renton Millar helped council organise the opening event and is excited to see the park finished.
Welcoming the new facility, Millar added “the design is really schmick, it’s in a great location and the people who built it, Convic, are the best there are when it comes to building skate parks – it has all the things you need to make a great skate park.”
Other park improvements include lighting, seating, USB phone chargers, and pathways. Council also provides free Wi-Fi at the park.
The skate park was funded through Sunshine Coast Council’s Capital Works Program and the Queensland Government Department of National Parks, Sport and Recreation contributed $347,000 through its Get Playing Plus Program.
Key design features:
• A combination-style park with features for both street and transition users
• Split level advanced bowl with a depth of 6ft – 8ft and an extension up to 9ft
• 4ft mini bowl, 5ft quarter pipe and 3ft quarter bowl
• Kicker to kicker with A-frame rail
• A stage located under the existing Norfolk Island pine tree, plus seating and shade, offers opportunities for community events within the precinct
