SPTO delivers tourism business training in New Caledonia

SPTO delivers tourism business training in New Caledonia
August 30, 2017

Aimed at inspiring and motivating tourism and business managers, owners and family members to develop and build their capabilities, the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) conducting a series of short, innovative tourism business training workshops for tourism industry stakeholders in New Caledonia last week.

Involving a series of specialised one-hour tourism training workshops called ‘powerhours’, the workshops were delivered by the Auckland-based Learn.Fast Centre.

With SPTO committed to facilitating training among its member countries, the training workshop covered key topics focused on branding, Pacific tourism trends, increasing profits, marketing on a small budget, sustainable ‘best practices’ for small business and crisis & risk management tips.

The training was coordinated by SPTO in partnership with our New Caledonia members, the government of New Caledonia and Nouvelle-Calédonie Tourisme Point Sud (New Caledonia Tourism Office).

Over the course of the two days, business coaching sessions were also provided to trainees who require detailed assistance.

SPTO Chief Executive Officer Chris Cocker  explained that New Caledonia achieved 115,676 visitors at the end of 2016, a 1.4% increase from 2015. Representing 5.7% of the total market share of inbound tourism into the Pacific Islands region, New Caledonia is the seventh largest destination for tourism into the region in 2016.

Anticipating that those numbers will reach 118,989 visitors by the end of 2017, Cocker explained “SPTO has designed these workshops to provide more value for money to our SPTO members and to provide benefits to the tourism industry.

“We value the membership of New Caledonia Tourism and working with them, we would like to strongly encourage tourism industry stakeholders in New Caledonia to take advantage of training opportunities such as these.”

This is the third SPTO training initiative this year following a workshop in Fiji earlier this month and sessions in Tonga in February.

Cocker concluded “we are extremely pleased with the feedback by participants on the past trainings delivered and looking to expand this more to other Pacific Islands.”
