Sport Singapore to relaunch aquatic and recreation centres as ‘lifestyle’ facilities
A new master plan from Sport Singapore will see public aquatic and recreation facilities revitalised with new designs, equipment and programs.
Part of the Sport Singapore's ActiveSG initiative, facilities in the Singapore suburbs of Jurong West, Clementi and Ang Mo Kio will soon have outdoor gyms by their pool, while free WiFi access, mobile phone charging stations and alfresco lounges for social gatherings will also be introduced at selected facilities.
Now dubbed 'lifestyle' facilities, Sport Singapore also plan to introduce obstacle courses, aqua spinning and Flippa Ball - a modified form of junior waterpolo.
With Sport Singapore actively promoting swimming lessons for children, the introduction of poolside gyms is partly intended to occupy parents while their children swim.
ActiveSG Head of Sports Clubs Lai Chin Kwang explains "our parents are committed as they come to the pool and enrichment classes with their kids. They are not doing anything else, except to wait for the enrichment classes to end.
“This is an opportunity that we want to engage, and of course, encourage social bonding.”
Facilities will also introduce new studio fitness programs such as piloxing and masala bhangra - cardio workouts that are new to Singapore. Participants can also dance to their favourite Korean pop music in the K-Pop X Fitness workshop.
Programs provide opportunities for families and friends to work out together and allow them to meet people with common interests.
