Sport NSW welcomes NSW Government funding for community facilities

Sport NSW welcomes NSW Government funding for community facilities
April 13, 2018

Peak body Sport NSW has welcomed the announcement by the NSW Government that it is to commit $100 million in funding for sporting facilities in the Greater Sydney area.

Following the recent finalisation of the Sydney stadium plan, which reduced the spend by $500 million, Sport NSW called on that money to be invested into suburban sporting infrastructure.

However, Sport NSW Chairperson Joseph La Posta feels that while yesterday’s announcement is a step in the right direction there is still more to do.

La Posta advised “I congratulate the (NSW) Premier for listening to our call to allocate the savings of the stadia spend on community sporting facilities in Greater Sydney.

“(This) announcement of $100 million over three years is a great start but there is still more to do.

“Through ongoing consultation with sports and councils over the past few years the Government has identified over $1 billion of community sporting infrastructure projects across NSW.

“The recently announced $200 million allocated to regional sporting facilities, plus this $100 million for Greater Sydney, means we are 30% of the way there.

“On behalf of our members – the sporting organisations and many local councils around NSW – we thank the NSW Government for today’s announcement, but we remind them that the majority of the need has still not been met.

“We will continue to advocate for investment into sport and sporting facilities so that community sportspeople, be they male or female, able bodied or disabled, can participate in their sport of choice and reap the vast physical and mental health benefits that come with participating in sport.”
