A world-class BMX track being planned for Adelaide's south has received funding commitments of $3.5 million from the South Australian Government and local councils.

In a budget commitment, the South Australian Government said it would spend $2 million the planned O'Halloran Hill facility.

If approved, it would be the only BMX facility in the state able to host major competitions, in line with standards set by world cycling's governing body, the UCI.

The Marion and Onkaparinga councils have both made in-principle commitments of up to $750,000 each.

Onkaparinga Mayor Lorraine Rosenberg told the ABC "a facility like this could be an ideal pathway for the elite riders of the future."

The South Australian Government announced it was looking into such a project last year, suggesting that such a facility would help attract bigger BMX events to the state and produce more riders.

The number of BMX riders in the state has doubled in the past five years, with more than half the riders coming from the southern suburbs.
