Skills Active launches Workforce Planning Toolkit for sport and recreation employers
March 27, 2017

Industry training organisation Skills Active Aotearoa has developed a handy, all-in-one resource to help sport and recreation organisations navigate the sometimes daunting process of workforce planning.

Introducing the Toolkit, Skills Active Chief Executive Dr Grant Davidson stated “the work that sport and recreation professionals do is woven into the fabric of the New Zealand national psyche, and in order to perform this critical role, our industry needs a highly-skilled, future-proofed workforce.

“The Skills Active Workforce Planning Toolkit is designed to empower industry organisations to analyse the skill and capacity they have on hand, and plan for the workforce they will need in the coming years.”

Skills Active’s 2017 Workforce Scan research document showed that sport and recreation employers range from large headcounts to very small; many have scattered workforces, or complex ones comprising everything from full-time staff to contractors to volunteers.

The five steps in a best practice workforce planning cycle are simple, but they can feel overwhelming, especially for those organisations who don’t have an HR department to rely on.

The five steps to good workforce planning

1. Understand your current and future business goals
2. Understand the existing skills and capacity in your workforce
3. Forecast the skills and capacity you will need in future
4. Identify the gaps
5. Use this information to prepare a workforce strategy

The tool is comprised of step-by-step guides and accompanying templates into which workforce data is entered.

Skills Active has developed two streams for the toolkit - basic and comprehensive. Whatever the level of workforce data and HR systems that is available to an organisation, there is a compatible version of the resource.

Skills Active can provide support and guidance on using the toolkit, or employers can complete the exercise independently. At the end of the process the organisation has a concise strategic resource that can be revisited and updated over time.
