Significant progress made on St Kilda Pier redevelopment

Significant progress made on St Kilda Pier redevelopment
September 28, 2022

Significant progress has been made on the St Kilda Pier redevelopment during the first six months of construction.

The Victorian Government’s $53 million investment will include a new curved pier with a wider and more accessible walkway, tiered seating, better access to the bay and clear views of the city skyline.

As St Kilda Pier’s breakwater is home to a colony of little penguins, construction will also include a new penguin viewing area that separates visitors from the penguins giving them an additional 140 metres of protected habitat.

Parks Victoria, EarthCare St Kilda and a team of other experts have been undertaking regular monitoring throughout construction to ensure the safety of penguins and other local marine life.

More than 130 solid steel piles have been installed and concrete crossheads have been installed, forming a strong base for the new pier.

Removal of the old timber pier deck to the south of the kiosk was also completed over winter with the timber salvaged for reuse to build the seating on the new pier.

More steel piles will be installed in the coming months over spring and summer as well as the relocation of the foreshore rock groyne wall.
