SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre ready for Short Course Swimming Championships
More than 250 swimmers, including South Australian Olympian Kyle Chalmers, will be in Adelaide this week to compete in the Hancock Prospecting Australian Short Course Swimming Championships.
Beginning this Thursday at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre, this will be the third time that the Championships have been held in Adelaide, the last two events being staged in 2011 and 2014.
Following a significant investment in swimming by the South Australian Government, the Centre has attracted eight national standard swimming competitions since 2011, hosting the two most recent Olympic selection trials in 2012 and 2016.
This is the third time the Australian Short Course Swimming Championships have been held in Adelaide, the last two being 2011 and 2014.
In addtion, the South Australian Government has invested an additional $70 million in tourism funding to market South Australia nationally and internationally and attract major events, helping to grow the State’ visitor economy to a record $6.3 billion.
Commenting on the Championships, South Australian Minister for Recreation and Sport and Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell stated “we love hosting world-class swimming events in South Australia and we’ve been lucky enough to host a total of nine major national swimming events since 2011, generating an economic impact of more than $21 million for the State.
“During the Championships, more than 250 swimmers, their coaches and accompanying supporters will spend time in South Australia not only competing, but enjoying all our great state has to offer.”
Swimming Australia Chief Executive Mark Anderson added “we are heading into a very busy swimming season and the 2017 Hancock Prospecting Australian Short Course Championship will be an important phase of our athletes training and skill development leading into the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
“The South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre is a great facility that holds fond memories for many of our swimmers after hosting the previous two Olympic and Paralympic selection events and I am looking forward to seeing the next generation take to the pool this weekend.”
