read moreRockhampton Council is inviting the community to provide feedback on their draft Walking Network Plan – aiming to make walking and cycling easier and more attractive in the Wandal area.
The Walking Network Plan will outline more connected, comfortable, direct, accessible and safe walking routes and environments in Wandal, thanks to the Queensland Government's Walking Local Government Grants.
Rockhampton Infrastructure Councillor Ellen Smith said this will be Council’s first Walking Network Plan, eventually forming part of the region’s broader Walking and Cycling Strategy.
Smith notes “we really want to encourage more people to walk as their preferred method of transport and recreation, and a Walking Network Plan will help us do just that.
“With community input, the Walking Network Plan will dictate where the most appropriate walking routes are within Wandal, and the infrastructure required to allow people to safely and comfortably use those routes.
"Wandal was endorsed as the chosen location for the inaugural Walking Network Plan as it is a central area connected by several primary locations, including schools, shops, aged care facilities and sporting fields, with limited footpaths and walking infrastructure.”
Member for Rockhampton, Barry O’Rourke said most Queenslanders walk in some form every day, whether it be for recreation, exercise or walking to public transport, work or school.
"We want walking to be the irresistible, clear choice for health, recreation and transport, particularly for short trips," O’Rourke said.
"Money invested in well planned infrastructure for people walking pays for itself in physical and mental health benefits, reduced traffic congestion, economic development, and socially connected communities."
Council is hosting a workshop with stakeholders that will involve participants reviewing the draft plan, discussing potential opportunities and constraints, undertaking a walking audit, and identifying priority routes and actions.
Those unable to attend the workshop are encouraged to complete Council’s short online survey to offer feedback and help better understand where the Wandal community walks and where walking infrastructure is required.
The survey is now open and will close on 3rd March. You can access the survey via engage.rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au/wandal-walking-network-plan
For more information about the workshop, which will be held on Wednesday 1st March 2023, please contact Council on 4932 9000.
