Refurbished Springs Lookout unveiled at Hobart’s Mt Wellington

Refurbished Springs Lookout unveiled at Hobart’s Mt Wellington
January 22, 2024

The City of Hobart has announced the completion and opening of the refurbished Springs Lookout on kunanyi/Mt Wellington which offers impressive views over Hobart, the River Derwent, Storm Bay and the Channel.

The Springs Lookout is accessible through a 10–15-minute loop walk from The Springs hut/café, following a restored path through the former exhibition gardens.

It offers a unique perspective of the surroundings and is a popular destination for those seeking a scenic experience.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds shared  “The Springs Lookout is Council’s latest investment in improving the visitor infrastructure on kunanyi/Mt Wellington.

“I'm sure it will used and appreciated by many people, as it is such a spectacular vantage point.

“The Springs is a great place to look out at the city and the river, but also to get a wonderful view of the Organ Pipes and the mountain itself.”

According to the September 2022 Tasmanian Visitor Survey, kunanyi/Mt Wellington is the State’s second most visited tourist attraction and the most visited natural site.

Cradle Mountain and Freycinet follow closely behind in terms of visitation.

The Southern region, including the mountain, continues to be a key driver of Tasmania’s visitor economy.

Destination Southern Tasmania Chief Executive Alex Heroys welcomed the upgrade of kunanyi/Mt Wellington infrastructure adding “there are few places in the world that you can access this level of natural beauty, backing into pure wilderness, with a short drive from a capitol city and all that holds.

“Visitors and locals alike love kunanyi and it is essential that we invest strategically with infrastructure that complements the natural experience, helps visitors and locals disperse across the mountain and showcases this incredible area.

“We congratulate the City of Hobart on this recent project and know that many thousands will enjoy the walk and views for years to come.”

Hobart Sustainability in Infrastructure Portfolio Chair Cr Bill Harvey said finding the right balance for kunanyi/Mt Wellington was a high priority for the City of Hobart

"The City of Hobart is committed to enhancing the accessibility and safety of kunanyi/Mt Wellington for both residents and visitors alike,” Cr Harvey noted.

“In addition to the breathtaking views from The Springs Lookout, we have undertaken a series of infrastructure projects aimed at improving the overall experience on the mountain.

“The upcoming completion of the Zig Zag track, replacement of the Pinnacle Road guard rail, and ongoing surface works on the Big Bend Fire Trail are integral parts of our comprehensive plan.

“These initiatives not only prioritise safety but also ensure that the natural beauty of kunanyi/Mt Wellington is preserved for future generations.”

The City of Hobart remains committed to preserving and enhancing kunanyi/Mt Wellington for the enjoyment for all and will continue to engage with both the Tasmanian and Australian Governments to invest in key infrastructure.
