Record August Snowfalls in the Snowy
In a remarkable turnaround for skiers and boarders, snow for the 2010 season has arrived, and convincingly, with record falls being recorded across the Snowy Mountains this August.
Speaking yesterday, Perisher's General Manager of Marketing, Sales and Hospitality Gary Grant explained "despite above average temperatures in Sydney, the mountains have continued to produce very cold temperatures and now abundant snow. With the recent fresh snowfalls of over 30cms in the past 24 hours upping the August total to 113cms, it's smiles all round from the visitors here at Perisher.
"You only have to look back through the snow charts to see that a slow season start doesn't necessarily translate into a poor one with many record breaking falls being recorded on the back of a less than average start."
The previous season recording the largest fall in August was in 1984, with this season following an almost identical snowfall pattern.
Neil Thew, Perisher's PR & Business Development Manager adds "many people were put off by the late start to the season but for those who remained faithful were rewarded. It's been a unanimous thumbs up from visitors across the resort this month with plenty of dry powder dumping almost daily."
Thew explains that social networking has played a significant role in attracting skiers and snowboarders to the resort, stating that in past years "diehards would have given up hope long before the first big dump. The slow start this season had a lot of people shelving their plans for a snow trip this year.
"Through the power of social networking Perisher kept their fans in touch with what has been happening throughout the resort, with technology as it is today people expect nothing less than real facts, and that is what we give them. It has also been great to see so many genuinely positive contributions from our close to 14,000 visiting fans.
Although early season conditions weren't ideal for natural snow they were perfect for man made snow, with Perisher breaking previous records with around 900,000 cubic metres of manmade snow being made during June and July.
Thew continues "September is shaping up to be exceptional with not only great snow but the many fantastic spring package deals."
