Port Phillip transforms parking bays into recreational parklets

Port Phillip has transformed a number of its parking bays into temporary community parklets, offering a new form of public space across the City.
The Victorian Government contributed a $100,000 grant under its Neighbourhood Activity Centre Renewal Fund towards the community parklets. Council has provided more than $100,000 for this project under its Live Love Local initiative aimed at keeping Port Phillip vibrant during the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recovery phase.
The fenced modular designs offer additional recreational opportunities for residents to meet friends and family or dine outdoors with the ten parklets in place until at least 30th April 2021 after which they may transfer to other locations.
Port Phillip Council Mayor Louise Crawford said the community parklets follow Council facilitating ten temporary business parklets in parking bays for traders to offer new or expanded outdoor dining.
Mayor Crawford advised “we are expecting outdoor spaces to be even more popular in the warmer weather as COVID-19 restrictions ease.
“These new community parklets are available for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s for a catch-up, a break while shopping or diving into a book.
“While you can relax there for as long as you like without needing to buy anything, they are also a great spot to enjoy a takeaway coffee or snack from nearby traders.”
The community parklets can be found at Napier Street, South Melbourne; Bridport Street, Albert Park; Spring Street South, Port Melbourne; Marlborough Street, St Kilda East; Meaden Street, Montague; Moubray Street, Albert Park; York Street, South Melbourne; Mills St, Middle Park; Tennyson St, Elwood and Waterfront Place.
