read moreWith the 10-day Netball World Cup starting at Sydney Olympic Park today (Friday 7th August), NSW Police are urging spectators to plan their trip ahead of the tournament games.
Bringing together the world’s top 16 netball nations, Australia has previously hosted the Netball World Cup on two occasions – Perth in 1967 and Sydney in 1991.
A majority of matches will be held at Allphones Arena with a limited number of day sessions at Netball Central – also located in Sydney Olympic Park.
Officers from NSW Police’s South West Metropolitan Region will be in attendance to ensure the safety and security of players, officials and thousands of spectators expected to descend on Sydney Olympic Park during the tournament.
South West Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli, said spectators are urged to leave their car at home and utilise public transport during the 10-day competition.
Assistant Commissioner Mennilli stated “this is an integrated ticketing event so extra train services are scheduled to help fans get to and from the venue with minimal delays.
“In addition, direct trains will be operating from Central Railway Station to Sydney Olympic Park each day.”
Parking is available at the venue, although spectators are urged to book ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
Assistant Commissioner Mennilli added “heavy traffic conditions are ... expected around Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday so drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time.
“Local roads may also be closed to ensure the safety of pedestrians travelling to and from venues at the weekend.”
