John Forrest National Park is Western Australia’s first national park. While it is a popular location for the local community and tourists, it has been a long time since any significant improvements were made to the park’s facilities.
To ensure visitors can continue to experience and enjoy the park, improvements have begun to revitalise and diversify the activities available to visitors.
Accessible picnic and barbeque facilities, landscaped gardens and pathways will complement the surrounding landscape and allow visitors and families to enjoy nature at its best.
With the redevelopment to also include a new café and function space, the Park is anticipated to attract tourists to the area and ensure this natural asset continues to be a must-visit destination.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservations and Attractions (DBCA) is delivering the project and has engaged with park users, key stakeholders and Aboriginal traditional owners over several years to inform the vision and planning of the park improvements.
Local contractor Phase 3 will deliver the $500,000 project, which is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
A $1.1 million access road will be built providing elevated views for visitors and connect to a new parking area nestled within the natural landscape.
The 730-metre stretch will be delivered by Proform Civil Pty Ltd, with work commencing within weeks.
The West Ridge carpark will be the next component of the project to get underway.
Scenic Drive will be closed to visitors from August with park entry via the main Park Road entrance for the duration of construction.
The State Government has now committed more than $17 million to the John Forrest National Park transformation. The $6.3 million allocated in the latest State Budget is in addition to an $8.4 million election commitment and $2.5 million from the WA Recovery Plan.
