NSW Minister for Police Troy Grant joined NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet to announce the nearly $40 million in funding for PCYC in the 2018/19 Budget, which includes more the $6 million in the first year.
Minister Grant said the PCYC does exceptional work engaging with young people across NSW to ensure they make positive life decisions and are diverted away from the justice system, advising “the clubs are in a unique position to facilitate meaningful relationships between local youth and police officers, and this significant investment in PCYC facilities will help strengthen those ties.
“I know firsthand how invaluable the influence of police, particularly from Youth Command, can be on our young people.
“I’m proud that this Government is investing in our youth, investing in our police and ultimately investing in a strong community.”
The funding will see a brand new multi-million dollar PCYC facility built in Hawkesbury, while the current clubs at Wagga Wagga, Walgett and Dubbo will be completely replaced.
Five regional clubs in Albury, Bourke, Kempsey, Griffith and Moree will also receive significant upgrades.
Treasurer Perrottet said that PCYC facilities provide positive opportunities for young people to build leadership and life skills, create new friendships and stay physically active, adding “this Budget is focused on investing in future generations, and this funding boost to PCYC will ensure kids and teens particularly in regional areas have modern and welcoming facilities to participate in a range of sporting and recreational activities.
“Ultimately, we want young people to feel connected to their local community, aspire to be constructive members of society and to have trust in our police.”
PCYC and NSW Police Force Youth Command work closely together to counter the impact of juvenile offending. In 2017, almost 1900 young people were involved in case management and programs by our police officers, most of whom were young offenders and youth at risk of offending.
