Operators soon to be announced for Penrith indoor snow attraction
August 16, 2024

Winter Sports World Managing Director Peter Magnisalis has advised he will soon be revealing the two key operators that will help bring Australia’s $500 million indoor snow resort to life.

Located within the Riverlink Tourism Precinct in the Western Sydney city of Penrith, it was granted State Significant Development Application (SSDA) approval by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment on 11th January, 2024.

Magnisalis (pictured below) will announce the selected food and beverage operator; and snow and ski attraction operator during his presentation on the second day of the 14th Annual NSW Major Projects Conference at the International Convention Centre (ICC Sydney) on 22nd August, 2024.

Dubbed ‘the giant Esky’, Winter Sports World is one of the largest new attraction projects currently in Australia and the biggest ever in Western Sydney.

Using real snow, Winter Sports World will include:

  • A 300 metre advanced open run for experienced skiers and snow boarders, learn to ski runs and a dedicated winter wonderland snow play area
  • Competition venue for snow sports such as alpine skiing
  • Ice climbing and crevasse outdoor rock climbing
  • 4-star 170-room hotel, conference and function rooms
  • Restaurant and cafes with snow views

Magnisalis will outline the tangible benefits to Western Sydney.

  • More than 2,724 new jobs during construction and operational phases, making it the largest private employer in the Penrith Local Government Area
  • Inject $222 million annually into the local economy, contributing $2.5 billion over the next decade
  • Double visitation and local tourism economy for Penrith with 1.35 million additional visitors

Magnisalis will also describe the building inside and out, connection to local Dharug culture and Country, what visitors can expect to experience and how Winter Sports World will position Western Sydney as a global tourist destination.

Magnisalis noted “This is a transformational piece of tourism and social infrastructure befitting Australia’s newest global gateway, Western Sydney International Airport, just 12km away.

“Winter Sports World will change the Penrith and Western Sydney landscape in a way and to such a degree that the whole world will sit up and take notice.

“This is an out-of-the-box project – and we need more of them in Western Sydney.’’

Further announcements will be made in September and October regarding the hotel operator and venue builder with Magnisalis advising “we are on track to begin construction in 2025.”

The Annual NSW Major Projects Conference attracts more than 200 of the who’s who of the major infrastructure project industry, including all tiers of government; urban and rural developers; construction contractors; road, rail and port authorities; environmental, engineering and project management consultants; projects planners and developers; banking, finance and law; architects and designers, suppliers; and economists.

Topics to be covered this year include Western Sydney Aerotropolis (vision for Western Sydney), schools infrastructure program, new Barangaroo Metro Station, Sydney Airport Gateway, the NSW State Infrastructure Strategy, Inland Rail Project update and a Sydney Metro update.
