Obesity expert Garry Egger to suggest ‘leaking guts’ as a cause of obesity

Obesity expert Garry Egger to suggest ‘leaking guts’ as a cause of obesity
August 22, 2013

A leaking gut could be what is keeping people fat, according to international obesity and lifestyle medicine expert, Professor Gary Egger.

Best known for the men's diet program, Gut Busters, Professor Egger says the gut may still have a central role in the obesity puzzle, stating "advances in scientific knowledge must change the way we look at obesity. We all have between two and four kilograms of bacteria in the gut but when you get fat, the composition of the gut changes dramatically.

"When we get fat we develop a porous gut lining, which means you can then store energy at a much greater level.

"So one calorie becomes 1.5 calories or two calories or whatever. You eat the same amount of food as someone who's not fat, but you store it more.

"So somebody who's been fat and lost weight is always likelier to get fatter again than somebody who's never been fat in the first place."

Professor Egger will discuss these new theories at the 2013 AustralAsian Academy of Anti-Ageing Medicine Conference in Melbourne on 24th and 25th August.

Themed Obesity & the Metabolic Syndrome: An Integrative Practice, the the 7th annual AustralAsian Academy of Anti-Ageing Medicine (A5M) Medical Conference for Integrative and Preventative Medicine will feature world leading experts in obesity, metabolic disorders and related diseases.

The conference will aid health professionals in learning how to optimise individual patient outcomes with Preventative, Integrative and Anti-Ageing Medicine.

Professor Egger, a best-selling author and renowned researcher, will educate health professionals on emerging science in the field of obesity and metabolic disorders.

After decades in the industry, Professor Egger says health professionals need to stop blaming individual overweight people and focus on changing social and family environments.

He adds "if you live in an obese environment it's very hard to change your behaviour. We have ready access to high calorie food and every new device is helping us to sit still more often."

"Australia is a victim of its own affluence and it's interesting that the only countries that have ever solved this problem are those whose economies have become depressed. When the economy gets bad, health gets good. And vice versa."

Other keynote speakers at the event include:

Dr Mark Donohoe, renowned for his work as an Integrative GP with special interests in Integrative Medicine, Nutritional & Environmental Medicine.

A5M President - Dr Nathan Francis MBBS (WA), FRACGP, MFM, FAMAC, FACNEM, GRAD. DIP. NUT.MED, DIP COG, ABAARM

The A5M is the local chapter of the world's largest Preventative Health & Anti-Ageing Medical Academy that trains doctors and health professionals in over 110 countries in Preventative & Integrative Medicine.

The 2013 Conference will combine both internal and external aspects of Anti-Ageing & Regenerative Medicine and will include over 30 workshops discussing the latest research and protocols.
