The go-kart standard, AS 3533.4.4 - 2011 Amusement rides and devices Part 4.4: Specific requirements - Concession go-karts, was developed in response to industry and stakeholder demand for a contemporary standard which addresses key safety, operational and industry considerations.
Standards Australia Chief Executive Colin Blair explains "the new standard provides designers, manufacturers, proprietors and operating staff with requirements and guidance which will protect both employees and end-users.
"This standard is part of the AS 3533 series designed to cover aspects of safety for amusement rides and devices, with Part 4.4 dealing specifically with concession go-karts. The new standards draws on international best practice with references to the US standard for go-karts.
"The standard was developed through consensus by a working group under Committee ME-051 Amusement Rides and Devices, which comprises key stakeholders including government, amusement industry, consumer protection, and child and workplace safety representatives."
The Australian Amusement, Leisure and Recreation Association (AALARA) and Board member Terry Skene was actively involved in the work of the working group.
The standard (AS 3533.4.4 - 2011 Amusement rides and devices Part 4.4.) can be ordered from SAI Global at www.saiglobal.com/
