read moreA proposal to build Australia’s only dedicated Trampoline Centre of Excellence at Glendale on the NSW Central Coast is part of a plan by Lake Macquarie City Council, the Hunter Region Sports Centre and Gymnastics NSW to boost major events, sports tourism and a suite of innovative community health and fitness programs.
Unveiled last week by Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser the project has been endorsed by Gymnastics Australia Chief Executive Kitty Chiller, who said the proposed facility will be a showcase for the sport, equal to any venue around the world.
Chiller advised “as the only stand-alone facility for high-performance trampolining in the country, the Trampoline Centre of Excellence will become the preferred venue for training camps, competition and major events from regional to international level.
“It will also be a hub for community sporting programs. Trampolining and tumbling are great activities for building strength, agility and timing and can be incorporated into training for a range of activities that require aerial skills, such as skateboarding, surfing, diving, wakeboarding and skiing.”
Lake Macquarie City Council has submitted an application for $7 million from the NSW Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund to support construction of the $10 million Trampoline Centre of Excellence.
The planned centre will have a 12-metre ceiling height, seating for 450 spectators, audio visual equipment for training purposes and a 1500 metre² arena equipped with nine trampolines, two double mini trampolines, two tumbling strips, a foam pit and warm-up area.
Mayor Fraser said the Trampoline Centre of Excellence will make Lake Macquarie the national home of the growing Olympic sport, driving sports tourism, boosting the visitor economy and providing first-rate facilities for the community.
She stated “we are expecting the centre to generate more than $2.5 million a year in visitor expenditure, which will be a significant boost to regional tourism and will promote our City as a premier sports destination.
“It will also be a valuable community asset, promoting healthy lifestyles through community-based participation programs.”
Gymnastics NSW Chief Executive, Aaron Bloomfield is also backing the proposal, adding “the Trampoline Centre of Excellence will be a world-class facility that will enable the development of high-performance trampoline to world championships and Olympic level and will see the sport bring state, national and international events to the area.”
The NSW Trampoline Centre of Excellence project is part of a $30 million masterplan for the expansion of the Hunter Region Sports Centre at Glendale, which will double the annual patronage of the busy sports complex.
