read moreMultiple events are planned for the Northern Territory commencing today and include five festivals, a Territory favourite, a national sporting event and a relatively new arrival on the Top End events scene.
First up is the Australian National Squash Championships, which will run from 22nd to 26th June. Players from across the country are in Darwin to take part, and this is the first time the Championships will take place outside the Eastern states.
The NT Writers Festival and Top End Pride Festival both start on Thursday and run until 26th June. The former promises four days of inspiring panels, immersive events and powerful performances focused around the theme of ‘balarr | catching the light’. The latter will feature an eclectic program of events ranging from cabaret and a family fun day to the Fierce Parade and Drink & Draw.
Saturday 25th June, is jam packed, with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra’s All Out 80s concert at The Amphitheatre, the Kindness Festival at Darwin Waterfront showcasing the cultural melting pot that is the Territory, and the NT City2Surf Festival, which is on Saturday and Sunday, and includes multiple options, from the 2km Marathon4Kids to the full 12km event.
Sunday 26th June sees a family favourite return to Mindil Beach, when the Beer Can Regatta again draws crowds to this spot for hours of fun as teams battle it out in boats made from beer cans.
Alice Springs is also in on the festival fun this weekend, with the famous Beanie Festival running from 24th-27th June - offering a wide range of workshops, classes and talks and Marketplace on Sunday, 26th June.
Northern Territory Minister for Major Events, Paul Kirby notes “this coming week is a prime example of the wide range of events you can enjoy here – there really is something for all tastes and interests."
“The Territory Government supports more than 70 events across the Territory and they attract thousands of attendees, including visitors from interstate. Independent research shows that in the 2021/22 financial year, just seven events that we supported injected $12.6 million into the Territory economy.”
As of late last month, Northern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles has named her new cabinet following the resignation of Michael Gunner, with Nicole Manison appointed Deputy Chief Minister while also taking on the tourism portfolio.
All these events are supported by the Northern Territory Government through Northern Territory Major Events Company.
