Monash University hosts second ‘City in Motion’ community outreach event

Monash University hosts second ‘City in Motion’ community outreach event
October 15, 2017

Monash University and the City of Monash have become Australia's 'City in Motion' for the second year in a row by jointly hosting a community recreation and sport event.

The University's recreation and sport were opened to local residents between 20th September and 8th October, with locals invited to participate in a range of events to promote health and well-being.

Monash Mayor Rebecca Paterson said Monash Council was delighted to partner with the University again, following the success of the first event in 2016.

Mayor Paterson stated "last year's event offered a unique experience for our community to come together for a fantastic community event and take part in promoting and celebrating healthy lifestyles."

Monash University President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner, sees that the event demonstrates the depth of the University's engagement with its local community.

Professor Gardner stated "many of our students, graduates and staff live near a Monash campus, enabling us to build extensive relationships with local communities

"Initiatives like Monash in Motion help strengthen those ties further and we are proud to be involved in this event."

Australian University Sport (AUS) Chief Executive Don Knapp said he was pleased to see Monash Council and Monash University join forces again, adding "this program enhances AUS' vision of healthy, active, engaged and well-rounded university students."

Team Monash Director Martin Doulton concluded "a fit and healthy community is something we at Monash University take very seriously, whether through our globally recognised sporting clubs or through wider initiatives to promote physical and mental well-being.

"We are thrilled to join forces with our partner Monash Council again to share something for everyone, from the mega-swim event to raise money for multiple sclerosis, to a water-wise surfing program to encourage water safety amongst our international communities."

The university has five campuses around Australia, as well as a number of international centres.

The event was endorsed by world university sport body FISU (Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire).
