MCEC to get $3 million technology makeover

MCEC to get $3 million technology makeover
February 24, 2015

In a first for the Asia-Pacific region Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) will invest $3 million in a digital makeover in response to the rise of bring-your-own-device technology.

Explaining the move, MCEC Director of Technology Operations Michael Walsh stated that upgrading the Centre’s signal path from analogue to digital “means customers can simply connect their portable devices, including laptops, tablets and smartphones, and experience pixel perfect vision projected to MCEC’s screens and recording devices.”

The upgrade follows on from the Centre’s launch of its Imagine technology brand last year, and is in addition to several other key technology upgrades including an upgrade of MCEC’s high density free Wi-Fi; an upgrade of the venue’s IP network, which increases the capacity of MCEC’s network and speed by tenfold to a 10GB network; new high definition digital totem signs providing event branding and directional signage for attendees; new animated infographics on digital signage to help bring the MCEC story to life; and three new ultra-high definition 4K projectors in the Plenary, which are 50% brighter and deliver four times as much detail as full high definition.

MCEC will also continue to enhance its social media offering by introducing a secure announcement tool for event organisers and a ‘favourites’ tool for use during session Q&As when using the venue’s iPad moderation software.

Walsh added “our customers recently rated our technology at 87% and we know it continues to be a key factor in our successful event delivery.

“We continue to monitor trends to ensure we are investing in the latest technologies to further enhance the visitor experience and make sure MCEC leads the business events industry and venues around the world.”

Since 2009 MCEC has invested in excess of $15 million into technology infrastructure; it has committed to spending more than $10 million over the next five years to meet the needs of its customers.
