read moreNew Zealand’s Upper Hutt City Council's H₂O Xtream Aquatic Centre has celebrated a blessing (Karakia Waerea) - marking the beginning of its new journey.
Staff, including lifeguards, will now occupy the building and familiarise themselves with critical areas of the facility. Additionally, this phase allows testing of the complete facility including the Hydroslides and ensuring the safety of all features before the public can enjoy them.
Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy said the blessing was enjoyed by all and marked a significant milestone for H2O Xtream noting “we’re an important step closer to the official opening of the facility, which I’m sure everyone is eagerly awaiting.”
Mike Ryan, Group Manager Community Services added “once testing is complete, H20 will announce the official opening date. We want to ensure all systems are fully operational and safe before making any public announcements, allowing time for any adjustments that may be necessary.”
Paul Smith, Project Manager Maycroft Construction shared “as the construction partner on the project, it was a pleasure for members of our team to attend the Karakia Waerea of H2O Xtream Aquatic Centre, led by Mana Whenua and whānau of Ōrongomai Marae, Upper Hutt, alongside Upper Hutt City Council elected and operational representatives.
"The blessing was both a culturally and operationally significant event as it signified a point in the project where the UHCC team can start to familiarise themselves with facility and how it will serve the community. It was also great to see that the attendees were clearly impressed with what they saw.”
The project remains on target for completion.
