Life Saving Victoria concerned for potential tragedies over long weekend

Life Saving Victoria concerned for potential tragedies over long weekend
January 26, 2024

Following four fatal drownings at Phillip Island this week, Life Saving Victoria (LSV) has issued a grave warning to Victorians to stay safe around water this long weekend.

Victorians are being urged to prioritise water safety and head to patrolled beaches over the long weekend, following the drowning deaths of four people who were pulled from the water at the unpatrolled beach at Forrest Caves on the south coast of Phillip Island, south-east of Melbourne.

19 people have drowned over this summer in Victoria.

While temperatures are not expected to be high, LSV General Manager Lifesaving Services Liam Krige said it’s important not to be complacent when recreating in, on and around water.

Krige advised “as we approach a long weekend, we want to remind the community the importance of being aware of the conditions and swimming between the flags to avoid a tragic outcome.

“On a public holiday you have double the likelihood of drowning so make choices to safeguard yourself and your loved ones. Opt for patrolled locations and swim between the flags. With 65-plus patrolled locations across the state, including patrolled waterways, the red and yellow flags will not be far away.

“Additionally, assessing conditions before entering the water, actively supervising children, wearing life jackets when boating or fishing, and postponing alcohol consumption until after water-related activities are completed are essential practices that can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. By making informed choices, we can collectively contribute to a safer and more enjoyable public holiday for all.”
