Over 500 students from years 3 to 6 came along to the launch of the Just Play program at the Lyneham Tennis Centre, participating in games and including kung fu wu shu, golf, and AFL in a fun, safe and non-competitive environment.
Local tennis star Nick Kyrgios was on hand to help open up the world of sport and active recreation to children who don’t usually participate in these activities.
Launching Just Play, ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation Shane Rattenbury explained “Just Play shows kids what opportunities are available to them, and that playing games and being active doesn’t have to be competitive but is a lot of fun.
“As part of the Healthy Weight Action Plan, the ACT Government is committed to supporting a healthy lifestyles and active living in our community. We want all kids to be able to access physical activity, because we know that good nutritional and exercise habits, if learned early, can make a lasting contribution to good health and general wellbeing throughout life.
“We’ve already got the PE Pulse Network here in Canberra, which increases options for sport and physical activity in our schools, and Just Play complements the Network by focussing on the delivery of high quality physical education and sport experiences for kids.”
Just Play is funded by the Australian Sports Commission, and will be delivered by School Sport ACT. The program creates links between schools and sporting providers and helps to build teachers’ capacity to deliver physical education and activity that is relevant to all students.
Events and gala days will be held regularly for primary schools, high schools and colleges, and there will be specific activities to ensure students with special needs and disabilities are able to participate.
The Just Play North Side Extravaganza was an opportunity for primary schools on the north side to ‘Just Play’ and have fun.
On 11th December Just Play will host the same event for south side primary schools at the Woden Athletics Track.
