Installation of innovative Myrtha System now 40% complete at Palmerston’s Swimming and Wellness Hub
June 1, 2023

Palmerston’s $19.4 million infrastructure project - the transformation of its ageing Swimming and Fitness Centre to a water and lifestyle precinct - is advancing well and on track for completion by the end of the year.

The City of Palmerston - the second largest city in the Northern Territory located 20kms from the Darwin, boasts more than 35,000 residents.

The SWELL ((Swimming, Wellness, Events, Leisure and Lifestyle) is set to transform the current aging Palmerston Swimming and Fitness Centre into a leisure hub, and be a positive addition to the growing family community of Palmerston, providing residents with a contemporary and family-friendly water and lifestyle precinct.

The SWELL project includes the refurbishment of the 50-metre pool with the installation of the new and innovative Myrtha System now 40% complete. Myrtha is the latest advanced technology in the swimming pool industry. It is a modular system made with stainless steel which essentially connects together to form perfect waterproofing.

Along with the 50-metre pool refurbishment the project includes a splash and play area, an events area, basketball half court, new and improved accessible toilets and change rooms, a new café and aquatic play structure.

Construction of the SWELL continues to meet key construction milestones with the groundworks complete and on track to open to the public at the end of the year.

City of Palmerston Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell shared “SWELL is set to deliver a state-of-the-art aquatic facility to our local community. There will be something for everyone bringing together wellness, entertainment, and social opportunities, and Council is proud of the community benefits that the project has delivered and will continue to deliver into the future.”

The project has supported local industry, providing economic and employment opportunities, creating 55 local jobs over its lifetime. The project is funded by the Northern Territory Government contributing $7.5 million, the Australian Government, with $5 million secured through the Building Better Regions Fund, as well as and City of Palmerston contributing $6.9 million.
