Industry alliance launches legal challenge to greyhound racing ban
An alliance of greyhound racing industry interest has launched a legal challenge to the NSW Government’s ban on the sport.
Having previously announced that it would not have funds to meet paying employee entitlements, the alliance of greyhound racing industry stakeholders has amassed a multi-million dollar fund with which it has launched a legal challenge to the NSW Government’s ban in the state’s supreme court.
The industry alliance’s legal team said it had filed proceedings in court today seeking a declaration that the NSW Government’s racing inquiry report was invalid, therefore challenging the ban that was based on the report of the special commission of inquiry into the industry.
Brenton Scott, Chief Executive of the NSW Breeders, Owners and Trainers’ Association, stated “the idea that a government can ban a perfectly lawful racing industry ... on the basis that it has lost some form of ‘intangible and unwritten’ social licence would be a very worrying development to many in the community.”
The legal challenge follows the discovery of further mass greyhound graves in NSW, weeks after a site was discovered in the Hunter Valley with at least 99 dead dogs.
Greyhound Racing NSW has confirmed it is investigating new “disturbing allegations” relating to mass graves across the state.
NSW acting Premier and Racing Minister Troy Grant hit back at the legal challenge, telling The Guardian Australia “the greyhound industry should have invested as much time and resources into ridding itself of live baiting and animal cruelty as it is now spending on lawyers, lobbyists and spin doctors.”
