Improving public access and safety along Victoria’s Coast
15 public land managers, including volunteer organisations, will receive almost $700,000 from the Victorian Government to improve public coastal access and public safety.
Through the 2015/16 Coastal Environments Program – Public Access and Risk, the Victorian Government has made a commitment to protecting the environment while ensuring better coastal infrastructure for safer and more enjoyable user experiences.
21 separate grant applications have been approved to coastal Committees of Management which, run by volunteers and coastal councils, will use the funds to create new or enhance existing infrastructure, such as:
• Repairs to improve beach stairways, boardwalks and access points;
• Works on viewing platforms and lookouts;
• Building of new access ramps, installing and improving public signage; and
• Undertaking risk assessment and management plans for safer access.
These grants give critical support to committees that strive to improve public access and minimise risk by fully funding or part-funding these valuable projects.
