Legendary Australian golfer Greg Norman, will return to the Gold Coast in December to present the inaugural Greg Norman Medal to the country’s best professional player currently competing on the world stage.

To be held on the evening of Tuesday 1st December, prior to the Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast, the gala night will play host to golf’s best and brightest with a select list of awards culminating in the sport’s most prestigious and newest award, the most valuable player announcement.

PGA of Australia Chief Executive Brian Thorburn said the evening would provide the Gold Coast with a star-studded night to celebrate the best of the best in the golfing world.

Thorburn stated “the Gold Coast is a fantastic location to play host to such a prestigious night.

“The Greg Norman Medal will become synonymous with the name of the best golfer in Australia in the coming years as it cements itself, like the Brownlow and Dally M have in AFL and NRL.”

Explaining that he was honoured to have the award named after him, Norman commented “I am deeply grateful and honoured to have this prestigious award named after me, which will hold a place of pride and prominence in my heart.

“Australian golf is in a great place right now, and I hope the young players out representing our country are inspired that hard work and perseverance can lead you to great things. My dream is to see others go on and achieve even more than I did.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said he was thrilled the city would play host to the award, adding “the Gold Coast is a golfing mecca so it’s the ideal location for the Greg Norman Medal and we look forward to welcoming some of the world’s best golfers here for the gala evening.

“The City of Gold Coast is proud to support the Greg Norman Medal and Australian PGA Championship as we work towards strengthening our reputation as Australia’s sporting events capital.”

A life member of the PGA and a recipient of the Order of Australia, Norman’s golfing achievements will now be immortalized through the establishment of the Medal.

Thorburn concluded “not only was Greg number one for 331 weeks, a two time major winner and a winner 20 times on the PGA Tour, he also won 31 times on our own PGA Tour of Australasia and has been a staunch supporter of the PGA of Australia and local golf for many years.”

The Australian PGA Championship, the richest tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia, will be played at the RACV Royal Pines Resort (pictured above) from the 3th to 6th December 2015 and is expected to attract a number of the world’s best players with the prize fund increasing to $1.75 million this year and a new co-sanctioning agreement with The European Tour.

The Championship will also provide visitors the chance to view the completed $10 million upgrade to the RACV Royal Pines Resort layout designed by Graham Marsh.
