Greater Dandenong Council extends YMCA’s facility management contract

Greater Dandenong Council extends YMCA’s facility management contract
June 12, 2017

YMCA Victoria has had its contract to manage and operate the City of Greater Dandenong’s three major aquatic and recreation centres extended for two years until 30th June 2019.

The contract includes Dandenong Oasis, Springers Leisure Centre and the state-of-the art Noble Park Aquatic Centre.

Greater Dandenong Council and the YMCA have worked in partnership to grow the reputation, profile and participation at each of the centres since the YMCA took over management in 2014.

Dandenong YMCA Area Manager, Travis Sauer, is happy with the progress made over the initial contract period and predicted further growth and community engagement.

Sauer explained “it is an exciting opportunity and we’re looking forward to the challenge of growing the membership base and participation levels at all three facilities in partnership with Council.

“The Centres have a strong regional focus with community groups, schools and youth groups and that will grow with the implementation of new programs and extended outreach to targeted market groups - particularly multi-cultural community groups. The facilities have huge potential for growth and we want to promote that.”

Dandenong Oasis is Greater Dandenong’s premier indoor aquatic recreation facility, swimming pool and gym. The centre includes a 50-metre pool, hydrotherapy pool, spa, sauna, toddler pool, fun pool, gym, squash courts, group fitness rooms, crèche/child care, café and table tennis hall.

Noble Park Aquatic Centre is a high-quality multi-purpose aquatic, recreation and community centre featuring a 50-metre heated outdoor pool with ramp access, iconic water slide, a heated indoor program/leisure pool, a large water splash/play area with tipping buckets and fountains, a café and a kiosk servicing the outdoor pool on busy days.

Springers Leisure Centre is a stadium sports facility and community hub that accommodates the needs of a wide variety of users and a broad cross-section of the local and surrounding community.

Greater Dandenong is the most culturally diverse municipality in Victoria and the second most diverse in Australia, with residents from more than 150 different birthplaces. More than half of the city’s population speak English as a second language with resident’s countries of origin including Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, India, China, Italy, Greece, Bosnia, Afghanistan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Sauer acknowledged this and said engaging these groups was a key challenge of growing the reach of the leisure facilities in the City of Greater Dandenong, adding “the CALD  - Culturally and Linguistically Diverse - community is large and growing in the area and that creates both an opportunity and challenge. Our programming is inclusive and sensitive to cultural needs and we aim to grow and further promote our activities to these markets.

“The YMCA aims to ensure programming is maximised and the facilities are utilised to their full potential. This will ensure positive membership and income growth and raise the profile of the facilities and Council across the Greater Dandenong community.”
