read moreAfter nearly three years in construction and opening in April 2021, Queensland’s Gold Coast $60.5 million gallery Home of the Arts Project (HOTA) has announced its 2021 lineup.
In the first year, the HOTA Gallery will present three major exhibitions alongside curated selections from its City Collection, which has more than 4500 artworks worth more than $32 million dollars and is one of the largest visual art collections in regional Australia.
The highlight is Contemporary Masters from New York: Art from the Mugrabi Collection (13th Nov 2021 – 27th Feb 2022), a world premiere exhibition exclusive to the Gold Coast and Australia that will feature approximately 70 works from some of the world’s most influential contemporary artists.
Drawn entirely from the Mugrabi’s famed private collection, which includes many pieces by Andy Warhol, the exhibition also includes Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Richard Prince and Jeff Koons, and marks the first time these iconic works have been shown in Australia.
The new gallery will open in April with Solid Gold: Artists from Paradise (10th April to 20th Jun 2021) featuring major new commissions and artwork by emerging and established Australian artists with a connection to the region, including Hiromi Tango, Michael Candy, Abbey McCulloch, Samuel Leighton-Dore and Libby Harward.
Celebrating the diversity and richness of the Gold Coast, the exhibition will feature sculpture, painting, video, photography and installations, both indoors and out.
The second major exhibition Lyrical Landscapes: The Art of William Robinson (24th July to 3rd Oct 2021) looks at one of Australia’s foremost living artists and greatest landscape painters. The exhibition will see Robinson’s entire Creation Series, produced over 16 years, presented together for the first time.
Coinciding with his 85th year, the exhibition curated by Dame Quentin Bryce will feature the award-winning artist’s monumental multi-panelled paintings alongside intimate studies and prints.
The dedicated Children’s Gallery will launch with World Upside Down (10th April – 10th Oct 2021).
Working with Queensland artists Lowana Skye-Davies and Alinta Krauth, the Children’s Gallery will be an immersive space filled with interactive art and hands-on making activities, inspired by the themes found in the first two major exhibitions.
Designed by international architects ARM, the art gallery spans six levels, with over 2000metre2 of AAA rated, international standard exhibition space.
The Main Exhibition Gallery is a 1000metre2 column-free space with six-metre high ceilings designed specifically for touring exhibitions of international size and scale.
The permanent City Collection spreads across three gallery spaces and will draw more than 100 works from the collection to reflect key developments in Australian art over the past 50 years.
The collection spans abstraction, feminist art, Indigenous art, ceramics and twenty-first-century photography.
The inaugural hang will include works by Ben Quilty, Tony Albert, Julie Rrap, Jenny Orchard, NELL, Tracey Moffatt, Gordon Bennett, Michael Zavros, Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori, Linde Ivimey, the Huxleys, Scott Redford, John Gollings, Kenneth Macqueen, Vida Lahey, Charles Blackman, Fred Williams, William Robinson and Ethel Carrick Fox.
Tickets for the exhibitions will be on sale in early 2021.
