Global Institute of Sport and Women Sport Australia combine to offer new learning opportunities

Global Institute of Sport and Women Sport Australia combine to offer new learning opportunities
July 21, 2022

Global Institute of Sport (GIS) and Women Sport Australia have joined forces to provide a number of unique opportunities for women to further their careers within the national and global sports industry.

Central to this collaboration is a full scholarship for a female student in Australia to complete a sports master’s degree with GIS.

Starting in January 2023, the successful scholar will have the choice between the MSc International Sport Management, MSc Football Business or MSc Football Coaching & Analysis with the flexibility of either studying completely online or in a blended format with intensive face-to-face teaching at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

In addition, GIS have pledged to provide Women Sport Australia members and pledgees with 15% off their course fees on any master’s degree or professional education course.

To further enhance the learning opportunities provided to Women Sport Australia members and GIS students, the organisations will work together to provide guest speaker opportunities and student placements as well as thought-leadership events online and in-person within Australia.

Gen Dorhmann, President of Women Sport Australia and Chief Executive of Table Tennis Victoria, commented “we’re delighted to partner with Global Institute of Sport to provide enhanced pathways into sports leadership for women in Australia.”

“Incentivising women to participate in sports master’s degrees and professional education for their own career progression will encourage more to study sports subjects and bring increased diversity to this incredible industry."

GIS President, Sharona Friedman added "the aim of this partnership is to create an environment that helps to provide better and increased opportunities for women in the sports industry. GIS has always championed an increasingly diverse student and staff body. Having the opportunity to make our degree programs and professional short courses more accessible and improve students’ chances of success in the industry is something we’re pleased to be part of.”

GIS' new programs, being run at the MCG from January 2023, are MSc International Sport Management (Blended), MSc International Sport Management (Online) and MSc Football Business (Online). These will be joined by the MSc Football Coaching & Analysis (Blended) program the following year, in January 2024.

Students have the option to study completely online or in a blended format, where the majority of content is available online but complemented with intensive periods of in-person teaching in Melbourne. All live online sessions are delivered in the afternoon or evening for students across the APAC region, and also available on-demand for ultimate flexibility. All students will also have unique access to the MCG throughout their studies.

Women Sport Australia is the peak national advocacy body for women in sport, and provides an invaluable mentorship program. GIS and Women Sport Australia will work together to provide mentoring opportunities for GIS’ students and also expand Women Sport Australia’s mentors using GIS’ global network.
