A FlowRider artificial surfing wave attraction has been revealed as part of a push to build a $250 million entertainment hub in the northern Adelaide suburb of Salisbury South.
Salisbury Council last week voted to give initial support to the retail and youth precinct, with Mayor Gillian Aldridge saying it was one of the most exciting developments the council had ever seen.
Mayor Aldridge stated "we've got nothing like this in the north, let alone Adelaide, so this development will attract a lot of people to the area.
"We are very keen for it to go ahead."
The Council will now ask South Australian Planning Minister John Rau to investigate rezoning the site from industrial to bulky goods.
Draft concept plans for the development include:
* $80 million youth and leisure precinct, including a multiplex cinema, bowling alley, games arcade, themed mini-golf, indoor rock climbing and skate park;
* FlowRider wave pool for indoor surfing;
* A factory outlet, hardware store, wholesale supermarket and fast-food precinct.
A similar artificial surfing wave attraction has also been suggested for the beachside suburb Glenelg, which could spark a race to be the first to bring the technology to Adelaide.
Currently there are three FlowRider attractions in Australia, at WhiteWater World and Wet'n'Wild Waterworld on the Gold Coast and at the Gold Oasis Recreation Centre in Kalgoorlie, WA.
