Final plans released for revitalisation of Fremantle harbours precinct

Final plans released for revitalisation of Fremantle harbours precinct
September 28, 2023

The Western Australian Government has released final plans for the revitalisation of the Fremantle harbours precinct – much welcomed by the City of Fremantle.

The Fremantle Harbours Master Plan will guide the future development of Fishing Boat Harbour and neighbouring Challenger and Success Harbours for the next 40 years.

The master plan includes:

  • changes to traffic management to allow the northern section of Mews Road to be converted into a shared plaza, facilitating more festivals and events
  • improved pedestrian connection to the city centre through internal plazas, and along Bathers Beach to Victoria Quay
  • a focus on mode shift with bicycle parking, end of trip facilities and better public transport integration
  • new superyacht berths and support facilities
  • opportunities for redevelopment sites, including a proposed mixed-use site where the boat lifter currently operates, and a site opposite Bathers Beach House.

Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said the master plan will play a big role in the city's future noting "It's pleasing to see some of the City's key aspirations reflected in the final plan for what is such an iconic and important part of the city's identity and character.

"The extension of Norfolk Street through to Mews Road has been a long-held priority for the City, as highlighted in our ‘Freo 2029 - Transformational Moves’ strategy. It will improve the connectivity between the city centre and Fishing Boat Harbour and will create opportunities to expand on Fremantle's tourism, commercial and residential offerings.

"It gives everyone clarity about the different areas within the harbours precinct and their purpose moving forward. With good planning it will be possible to maintain the working operations of the boat harbour while creating waterfront destinations for public use and enjoyment.

"We look forward to working with the state government on these various projects for the benefit of those living, working or visiting Fremantle.”
