Destination NSW announces 1,000 COVIDSafe gigs to be staged from November
Some of Australia’s most popular musical acts - including Jimmy Barnes, The Veronicas, Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins, Amy Shark, Tones and I and Birds of Tokyo - will headline a new concert series that will present 1,000 COVIDSafe performance to Sydney and regional NSW in November.
Aimed at boosting Australian artists and backing live music venues across the state, the NSW Government’s Great Southern Nights initiative will be delivered by its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW in partnership with the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).
Explaining that the performance will support the recovery of the live music, entertainment and hospitality industries, NSW Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres stated “this celebration of outstanding Australian artists and incredible live music venues across NSW gives us all something to look forward to, from event-goers to industry.
“We’ll be able to get out and see Sydney and regional NSW come to life with some of Australia’s top acts including Jimmy Barnes, Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins and Tones and I alongside emerging artists in unexpected places.”
The program is open to emerging artists and venues across the state to nominate to also be involved.
Welcoming the initiative, Jimmy Barnes advised “I know fans are hungry for live music while lots of musos and roadies are just plain hungry. All these shows will be a great way to kick start the live music sector, it’s great that the government is putting (their) own money behind it making that happen right across our state during Australian music month.”
When presented, the gigs will each need to follow the most up-to-date advice on venue size limits and social distancing requirements.
Industry research by Music NSW showed that pre-coronavirus live music generated approximately $3.6 billion and 23,000 jobs for the economy in NSW alone.
