The Bald Archy Prize, a playful send-up of the esteemed Archibald Prize, was conceived by the late Peter Batey in a corrugated iron shed in Coolac in 1994. It has since become a cherished showcase of Australian wit, larrikin spirit, and artistic satire. The prize champions works that are witty, slapstick, vulgar, farcical, and irreverent, poking fun at prominent Australians from the worlds of art, letters, politics, sport, and media.
Mayor Cheryl Cook enthused "we are absolutely thrilled to welcome the Bald Archy Prize back to the Corowa Art Space. It's a fantastic event that brings a unique blend of art, humour, and quintessential Australian satire to our community. The exhibition is always a huge hit, offering a wonderful opportunity for families and art lovers alike to enjoy some truly clever and entertaining works. We encourage everyone to come and experience the wit and charm of the Bald Archy Prize."
The award continues to be judged by Professor Maude the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo whose eye for art matches her wicked wit.
Maude has selected Phil Meatchem as the 2025 winner who has taken home the $10,000 prize for his witty and provocative entry. Meatchem's satirical artwork, titled 'Despicable Ploy,' features Opposition Leader Peter Dutton. The painting depicts Dutton as a character loosely based on Gru from the 'Despicable Me' franchise using ominous nuclear power station stacks as chess pieces, a clear jab at his proposed nuclear power plan.
Visitors can bring the whole family to explore 38 playful and entertaining artworks of familiar personalities. Other notable portrait subjects on display will include Raygun, Hugh Jackman, Robert Irwin, Senator Lidia Thorpe, Gina Rinehart, and Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia.
