Concept plans being finalised for Georges River Aquatic Facility site assessment

Georges River Council, situated southern Sydney, has announced that concept plans are being finalised for the Georges River Aquatic Facility – Site Assessment Review with both Carss Park and Todd Park locations progressing.

The concept plans developed include an 8-lane 51.5metre Olympic standard pool, a 25metre accessible learn-to-swim pool, gym and fitness areas, a café, wet and dry accessible change facilities and seating areas, operational offices, and a purpose-built carpark.

On 26th October 2022 Council officers provided a comprehensive briefing to Councillors on site investigations undertaken for both Carss Park and Todd Park after Council previously resolved to investigate both sites.

The Site Assessment Review will include detailed technical investigations for each of the aquatic facility concepts including:

site services and utilities
geotechnical and civil engineering review
flood and stormwater management
traffic studies
environmental impact assessment
heritage impact assessment
arboricultural assessment
detailed cost plans

The Kogarah War Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool was closed in July 2019 after Council’s commissioned independent structural assessment identified existing structures had reached the end of their serviceable life, and repairs or upgrades were unfeasible.

Mayor Nick Katris notes “The Georges River area is currently home to two aquatic centres, The Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre and Sans Souci Leisure Centre.

“Our Open Space, Recreation and Community Facilities Strategy, and the Regional Aquatic Facility Site Suitability and Feasibility Study undertaken in 2020 found that we need an additional aquatic facility in the Georges River LGA to serve the population.”
