Commonwealth Games Federation impressed with Gold Coast 2018 progress

November 30, 2013

Following a visit to the Gold Coact, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Coordination Commission has backed preparations for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018)

Commenting on this week's visit, Queensland Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey welcomed confirmation from CGF Coordination Commission Chairman Bruce Robertson, that the CGF were impressed with the progress made.

Minister Stuckey explained "the Coordination Commission brings great expertise in the delivery of this event. Their recognition of work underway and already completed means that we are set to deliver a world-class event.

"This is a ringing endorsement for the tireless work that (is being undertaken) to deliver Australia's largest sporting event of the decade.

"I am delighted that the Commission has reinforced that we are well and truly on track and are in fact impressed with a number of areas in our planning and we will heed their advice to continue on the positive path we have forged so far."

The Coordination Commission have been on the Gold Coast conducting the first of their biannual technical reviews involving presentations on various functional areas including general planning status, workforce, transport, infrastructure and overlay, and security.

The Commission's five members and team of expert technical advisors spent this week reviewing documentation and exploring key elements of planning followed by more in-depth focus on various elements with Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) executives and relevant government agencies.

Minister Stuckey added "the delivery of major infrastructure projects such as the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre at the Southport Broadwater and the Commonwealth Games Village at the Gold Coast Parklands, in conjunction with the Queensland Government and the City of Gold Coast are significant developments for these games.

"GOLDOC have been meticulous with their attention to detail in planning and scheduling to ensure we deliver on key milestones."

GOLDOC Chairman, Nigel Chamier OAM said the week has been enormously valuable in the journey towards 2018 and he too was delighted with the response from the Commission.

Charmier added "the information and feedback provided by the Coordination Commission will be incorporated into the ongoing strategic planning phase for GC2018 and we look forward to learning from their experience and expertise as we move staging of a great Commonwealth Games."
