City of Busselton to move forward with performing arts and convention centre plan

City of Busselton to move forward with performing arts and convention centre plan
September 13, 2021

Busselton City Council has voted to proceed with its plans to develop a $38 million performing arts and convention centre venue.

Despite a recent community survey that showed a majority of responding residents would prefer not to go ahead with the project, Councillors last week voted seven to two to accept a tender for the development.

Attracting a $10.35 million Federal Government grant costs estimates for the project have added $10 million more than what was budgeted for in the City of Busselton's long term financial plan, and could see the council borrow $17 million if it is unable to secure additional funding.

Planned as a multi-functional venue, integrated with the Weld Theatre and ArtGeo Gallery, the Busselton Performing Arts and Convention Centre will include a purpose built indoor performance and convention venue capable of hosting large events for over 1000 people, comprising a minimum 600 seat auditorium with retractable seats, and fixed dress circle seats, along with separate multi-purpose studio, rehearsal, break out rooms with capacity to seat 400 in banquet style layout.

Expected to host live performances, business events, award nights and graduations, the project proposal says it would “provide an iconic venue of quality, contemporary design and the latest technologies that will create new markets for business in convention, conferences, trade shows and the performing arts.

The venue will be located in the City’s Cultural Precinct Queen Street.

It is anticipated that the venue will be completed by 2023.
