City Council agrees Adelaide Aquatic Centre renovations
The Adelaide City Council has voted to renovate its Adelaide Aquatic Centre. The Council backed a report recommending a staged redevelopment of the North Adelaide facility as being cheaper than building a new swimming centre for the city region.
The first stage of the redevelopment of facility, which dates back to 1969, will see the roof replaced at a cost of $2.5 million.
Lord Mayor Michael Harbison describes this work as an important investment, stating âin the long term we will see a very exciting aquatic centre, a recreational centre with lots of interesting things for young people to do, and a place that provides opportunities for all of us to get fit.".
The Council had been considering whether it should move the Aquatic Centre from its site in the Adelaide Park Lands in North Adelaide to a more central location in the city.
With South Australia's new State Swimming Centre set to open in the suburb of Marion later this year, Lord Mayor Harbison recently explained that "as the Marion centre comes on line we have to make sure that we can create in the Adelaide Aquatic Centre a centre for recreational swimming that really takes us many years into the future."
