Belgravia Leisure to manage five Mornington Peninsula Shire recreation and sport facilities

September 14, 2017

The Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has announced that it is to partner with Belgravia Leisure for the management and operation of five of its facilities: the Pelican Park Recreation Centre; Civic Reserve Recreation Centre; Somerville Health & Fitness Studio; Crib Point Pool and Western Port Gymnastics at Hastings Hub and All Access outreach programs.

Announcing the new arrangement, Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Bev Colomb said the partnership will bring the best services for the best value to members, user groups, and the community.

Revealing that all existing staff will continue their employment with Belgravia Leisure, with recognition of prior service and maintenance of existing terms and conditions of employment, Mayor Colomb advised “it was of the utmost importance to Council to ensure the ongoing employment for each and every team member.

“Our sport and leisure team is like ‘family’ to our community - from learning to swim classes to our ‘Age Strong’ classes for seniors, we know our members will be pleased to have their programs delivered by their favourite coach, instructor or teacher.”

Based on current projections, the new partnership, which will commence from 29th October, is expected to deliver the Council savings in the order of $4 to $5 million over the next five years.

Mayor Colomb said it will be “business as usual” with the same services being delivered by the same great, friendly and professional team members.

Mayor Colomb said the partnership delivers on:

• Protection of local jobs
• All staff continuing employment
• Training, development and career opportunities for staff
• No change to current opening hours, fees, memberships, bookings, programs, services or timetables
• Focus on inclusion and all access programs
• At least two new programs introduced each year
• Regular equipment renewal program
• New, dedicated Community Liaison Officer to work with community and user groups to strengthen programs and services
• Cost savings to the community

She added “this is a win-win-win: a win for cost-effective service delivery on behalf of our community, a win for members and user groups, and a win for staff.

“Council will retain ownership and maintenance of the buildings and remains committed to ensuring sport, leisure and recreation service are available to our community.

“We’re looking forward to working closely with Belgravia Leisure to further our commitment to delivering the best health and wellbeing outcomes and services for the best value for money.”

Belgravia Leisure Chief Executive Nick Cox, said he is looking forward to working with Council to build upon the excellent work achieved over many years of service to the Mornington Peninsula community.

Coax advised “Belgravia Leisure is very excited to be partnering with the Mornington Peninsula Shire and we look forward to working with the local team in expanding upon the current programs and services.

“We will work with existing members, user groups and community organisations to plan and deliver a range of new and exciting aquatic and fitness programs. In particular our focus will be on increasing access for people of all ages and abilities.

“Belgravia Leisure will maintain existing memberships and bookings, with no changes to current programs, services or operational hours. We are confident that through additional programming significant benefits will flow through to the community.”

Belgravia Leisure will host a series of members’ breakfasts and information evenings, and will be in contact with user groups in the coming weeks.

Recognising the great work done by staff and committing to supporting staff through the transition, Cox concluded “Belgravia Leisure is pleased to offer every staff member ongoing employment and we will maintain their rate of pay and all other terms and conditions of their employment. We will also recognise all prior years of service for every staff member.”

Belgravia Leisure staff have access to professional development and career progression opportunities across 120 aquatic, leisure, golf and sports facilities in Australia and New Zealand, as well as exclusive staff benefits.
