read moreBelgravia Leisure has detailed its commitment to reducing plastic waste, explaining how, since August 2019, it stopped the purchase and supply of plastic straws, plastic bags and plastic cutlery in all its managed venues across Australia and New Zealand.
Mindful that six of Australia’s eight states and territories having committed to banning single-use plastics and New Zealand’s Government having announced the launch of a fund to find alternatives to plastic and phase out single-use plastic, Belgravia Leisure’s move took account of growing consumer sentiment over single-use plastics and preservation of the natural environment.
Belgravia Leisure Group Manager of Business Improvement, Alexia Morgan explains “Belgravia Leisure saw the need to say no to problematic single-use plastics well ahead of the much-needed bans across Australia and New Zealand.
“We encourage other businesses to follow suit - it’s not only good for the environment, but it’s also good for business.”
Most plastics break into even smaller particles, releasing chemicals into the soil, air, and water that are harmful to animals, plants, people and the environment. When not disposed of correctly straws are a particular hazard. Small and light, straws can end up accidentally ingested by sea animals who mistake plastic for food.
Whether still fully formed or broken down into tiny fragments, the plastic straws polluting our oceans continue to endanger wildlife - and, by extension, the environment.
