Battles begin at Kryal Castle

Battles begin at Kryal Castle
November 20, 2013

This Saturday (23rd November) will see medieval themed attraction Kryal Castle host its first ever mutli-period re-enactment event with a series of shows and displays recreating exciting historical events and battles from the 6th to the 14th century.

Located just outside Ballarat, Kryal Castle's grounds and fortress re-opened in March after a multi million dollar refurbishment and this weekend's event will see the attraction awash with colour and movement. The day is intended to be one of fun and learning for all with a range of events and activities including workshops, combat displays, archery, mounted displays, vehicles, interactive activities and opportunities to get up and close to a wide assortment of historical armour and weaponry.

The event was originally a Dark Age and Medieval Event, held at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick, but its relocation to Kryal Castle, where it is supported by the Australian Re-enactment Association, places it in an exciting period setting.

Groups attending the event and their acts include:

• Actor Fight Training Australia, 11th Century Viking Battle Display
• New Varangian Guard, Victorian Branch - A Living history display, the group represents Hiberno a trading partner of Byzantium from 1,000 years ago
• Frojel Gotlandica Viking Re-enactment Society - Viking Combat Displays
• The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) - Varying fighting formats from the Dark Ages including competitive combat with heraldry and spectators. A tournament displaying heavy and rapier fighting styles, with heraldic announcements. Members will be in period clothing and able to answer questions from the public.
• The Sovereign Military Order of the Knights Templar Tasmania (Dragon Order) - a 14th Century combat tournament and a display of 14th and 15th century weapons and armour.
• Free Companies Incorporated (The White Company and other branches) - Archery demonstration and an archery competition between teams from other clubs attending
• Leongatha Medieval Society 9 Combat display with other medieval groups
• Household de Coucy - Late 14th century living history and deeds of arms with chivalric weapons (longsword, poleaxe, foot lance and dagger). The group will set up a living history encampment depicting the dress, tents and daily life in the encampment of Enguerrand de Coucy who was a prominent figure in France and England in the late 14th century.
• Legends of Markoth – a tournament involving combatants in a series of Duels (single combat) mixing theatrics and competitive combat.
