Marina Bay Sands is to host Singapore's largest ever BASE jumping event on New Year's Day.
Seven professional BASE jumpers, hailing from different parts of the world, will participate in this adrenaline pumping display to welcome the New Year at the rooftop Sands SkyPark at the integrated resort.
The jumpers, who have completed about 8,000 successful jumps in total, will be launching off the Observation Deck of the Sands SkyPark in quick succession, landing on the Bayfront Bridge.
BASE jumping is an extreme sport activity that employs an initially packed parachute to jump from fixed objects such as tall buildings, antennas, bridges and cliffs.
The event is free and open to all ages, with visitors able to witness this first-ever stunt from various vantage points on around Singapore's Marina Bay.
This BASE Jumping stunt and team has been put together by extreme sports enthusiast and professional BASE jumper Omer Mei-Dan, who successfully executed the world's first climbing race on a building facade to mark Marina Bay Sands' opening celebrations in June last year.
At that time, some 21 professional climbers, representing over 10 countries, scaled the walls of the three hotel towers in the World Championship Climb to the Sands SkyPark.
Professional BASE jumper and wing-suit pilot Jeb Corliss will be another participant in the New Year's Day BASE jump. With over 12 years of experience and over 1,000 BASE jumps under his belt, Corliss has launched himself off some of the most famous international structures, including the Jin Moa Tower in Shanghai, The Petronas Towers in Malaysia and the Ostankino Tower in Moscow. In the latter jump, Corliss was part of a 26-strong group of BASE jumpers which broke the world record for world's largest BASE jumping formation from any structure.
Of his next challenge at Marina Bay Sands, Corliss explains "I am so excited to be a part of such special event at such a beautiful location. Marina Bay Sands is an iconic structure that lends itself perfectly to the sport I love so much."
Corliss will be joined by Stephen Mueller (USA), Anne Helliwell (USA), James Pouchert (USA), Marta Empinotti (Brazil), Amanda Vicharelli (USA), Tim Mattson (USA) and Brendon Cork (USA).
Traffic along Bayfront Avenue will be temporarily stopped during the jump, and during two practice jumps on Friday 30th December and Saturday 31st December, with organisers stressing that the safety of the jumpers remains as the first and foremost concern to all stakeholders.
For the execution of the stunt, the Public Observation Deck of the Sands SkyPark will be closed off to public at specific times.
